What Year 1 addition covers

Year 1 is where adding stops being something done with counters and starts being something written down. Children add within 20 — 3 + 14, 13 + 7 — and learn the number bonds that make 10 and then 20. Every sum on the sheet above totals 20 or less, which is what “within 20” actually means and is a stricter promise than merely keeping the two numbers small. The sheet is 18 questions rather than the usual 20. Every sheet is A4, print-ready, and comes with an answer key.

What addition does Year 1 cover?

Adding within 20. Children work with one-digit and two-digit numbers, learn the number bonds that make 10 and then 20, and start reading and writing the +, − and = signs for themselves. The written sum is new in Year 1 — before this, adding is done with objects and pictures — so these sheets are practice at recognising what a written sum is asking for as much as at getting the answer.

Does “within 20” mean the answer, or just the numbers?

The answer. It is the distinction that decides whether a sheet is really Year 1 work. If you only keep the two numbers under 20 you can still print 18 + 14, which totals 32 and is Year 3 column addition wearing a Year 1 label. These sheets cap the total instead, so 13 + 7 = 20 is the largest sum a child will meet and nothing on the page crosses into the twenties. Both numbers can still be two-digit — 1 + 19 turns up — because the statutory statement names two-digit numbers explicitly.

How many questions should a Year 1 child do at once?

The sheet is 18 by default rather than the 20 or 25 the older years get, and 12 is a better daily dose for most five- and six-year-olds. What matters more than the number is whether the answers are being recalled or counted out on fingers: a child who counts up from 13 to reach 13 + 5 is doing something different from one who knows it, and both are fine in Year 1, but only the second is what number bonds are for. Short and often beats long and occasional.
