What Year 5 maths covers
Year 5 is where the numbers get big and the methods get formal. Column addition and subtraction move to numbers with more than four digits, and short division arrives properly — dividing a four-digit number by a single digit and then interpreting the remainder rather than simply recording it. No new times tables are introduced this year; the tables from Year 4 are expected to be instant, because they are now the thing everything else is built on. Division takes the largest share of the sheet above for that reason. Every sheet is A4, print-ready, and comes with an answer key.
Answers included — a separate marking page with every sheet.
Year 5 topics
Drill one skill at a time:
Division (with remainders) →
Short division with remainders, written as “47 r 3”.
Times tables →
Recall at speed — every fact between 6 × 6 and 12 × 12.
Equivalent fractions →
Larger denominators and tenths, like 3/10 = ?/40.
Questions parents ask
What maths does a child learn in Year 5?
Year 5 is where the numbers get big and the methods get formal. Children add and subtract whole numbers with more than four digits using column methods, divide four-digit numbers by a single digit using short division, and — the part that trips children up — interpret the remainder rather than just writing it down. They also meet factors, multiples and primes, and write equivalent fractions including tenths and hundredths. No new times tables are introduced; the ones from Year 4 are simply expected to be instant.
Why does the sheet lean on division?
Because remainders are the Year 5 hurdle. A child who can compute 253 ÷ 7 = 36 r 1 still has to decide, in a word problem, whether the answer is 36, 37, or 36 and a bit — and the curriculum asks them to interpret remainders appropriately for the context. Division gets the largest share of this sheet for that reason. The other skills are here to keep the sheet mixed, so a child has to recognise which method a question needs.
Are the answers included?
Yes. Keep 'Answers' ticked and a separate answer-key page is made with every sheet, so marking takes seconds. Every answer is computed exactly and checked.
Do I need to sign up?
No. Set the sheet up, make it, then print it or download the PDF. There is no login, ever.
