Year 3 introduces formal written (columnar) addition of numbers with up to three digits, building on the mental and two-digit work from Year 2. These sheets give three-digit-plus-three-digit sums to practise the written method.
Some answers go past 999 — is that still Year 3?
Yes. The Year 3 statement bounds the numbers you start with, not the total: children add and subtract numbers with up to three digits using formal column methods. Two three-digit numbers can easily total more than a thousand — 847 + 465 = 1312 — and carrying into a fourth column is part of the method rather than a mistake. These sheets draw both numbers from 100 to 999, so totals in the thousands turn up regularly.
