What Year 4 equivalent fractions covers

In Year 4, children recognise and show families of common equivalent fractions — the chains like 1/2, 2/4, 3/6, 4/8 that all describe the same amount. Each question gives a fraction and a new denominator, and the child fills in the missing numerator: 2/5 = ?/15 or 5/6 = ?/18. Denominators now include fifths and sixths, and scale further than in Year 3. Every sheet is A4, print-ready, and comes with an answer key.

Answers included — a separate marking page with every sheet.

Questions parents ask

What is a family of equivalent fractions?

A family is all the fractions equal to the same amount: 1/2, 2/4, 3/6, 4/8, 5/10 and so on. Each one comes from multiplying the numerator and the denominator of 1/2 by the same number. Year 4 children learn to recognise and continue these families.

How is Year 4 harder than Year 3?

Year 4 adds fifths and sixths to the halves, thirds and quarters of Year 3, and scales up to larger denominators — for example 5/6 = ?/18 rather than 1/2 = ?/6. The method is unchanged: multiply the top by whatever the bottom was multiplied by.

Why is the answer not written in its simplest form?

Because simplifying it would just give back the fraction on the left. The point of the exercise is to scale a fraction up to a new denominator, so 5/6 = 15/18 is exactly the answer we want. Writing fractions in their simplest form comes later, in Year 6.

Are the answers included?

Yes. Keep 'Answers' ticked and a separate answer-key page is made with every sheet, so marking takes seconds. Every answer is computed exactly and checked.
