What Year 5 addition covers

Year 5 adds whole numbers with more than four digits by the formal column method — 76117 + 40531, 54691 + 53291 — so every question on this sheet is five-digit plus five-digit, and most totals run to six. The method has not changed since Year 4; what is harder is keeping place value straight across more columns without losing track. Year 5 also expects children to estimate first and check after, which is the habit that catches a misaligned column before the marker does. Every sheet is A4, print-ready, and comes with an answer key.

What addition does Year 5 cover?

Adding whole numbers with more than four digits, using formal column methods. The method is unchanged from Year 4 — the work is in holding place value steady across more columns, and in the rounding and estimating the year expects alongside it. Year 5 is where children are asked to say roughly what an answer should be before they work it out, so that 76117 + 40531 being about 116000 is a check rather than a guess.

Why five digits, when the curriculum just says “more than 4”?

Because a sheet has to choose, and five is the first size that satisfies the statement. The tempting alternative — draw from four digits up to six, so the sheet "covers the range" — does not work the way it sounds. The numbers are drawn evenly across whatever band you give them, so a band from 1000 to 99999 would print five-digit sums about nine times in ten and simply look like an inconsistent five-digit sheet. Four-digit column addition is what Year 4 is for, and it has its own page.

Is there any point practising this once a child can already do it?

Some, but not much, and it is worth knowing what to look for instead. Once the method is secure the useful thing is speed and self-checking rather than more questions: can your child estimate first, work it out, and then notice when the answer is nowhere near the estimate? Year 5 also introduces adding numbers with decimals, so the same columns get a new demand placed on them. If the sheet is coming back all correct and quickly, that skill has arrived and time is better spent elsewhere.
