In Year 5, finding a fraction of an amount becomes multiplying a proper fraction by a whole number — which is what the national curriculum asks for at this stage. 3/5 of 40 and 3/5 × 40 are the same calculation. How is Year 5 fractions of amounts harder than Year 4?
Two ways. The fractions get harder — halves are gone entirely, and sevenths, ninths and twelfths are in, so every question needs a division fact beyond the easy ones. And the amounts roughly double: Year 4 stops around 120, Year 5 goes past 180. The method does not change — divide by the denominator, multiply by the numerator — but neither step is now automatic.
Why is 3/5 of 40 the same as 3/5 × 40?
Because they are one calculation written two ways, and Year 5 is where the national curriculum says so — the statutory statement is about multiplying a proper fraction by a whole number. "Of" means multiply. 3/5 of 40 is 40 ÷ 5 = 8, then 8 × 3 = 24; 3/5 × 40 gives 120/5, which is also 24. Children who see that the two are the same find fraction multiplication in Year 6 much easier.
