What Year 5 fractions covers

In Year 5 the adding and subtracting is not the new part — the answer is. Children still work over a shared denominator, but they now simplify the result and write anything over one whole as a mixed number: 8/9 + 4/9 is worked as 12/9 and written as 1 1/3, and 8/12 − 4/12 is marked as 1/3. Denominators are the composite ones where simplifying actually bites — quarters, sixths, eighths, ninths, tenths and twelfths. Every sheet is A4, print-ready, and comes with an answer key.

Questions parents ask

What fractions does Year 5 cover?

Year 5 children add and subtract fractions and convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers — for example 8/9 + 4/9 = 12/9 = 1 1/3. The arithmetic is the same as Year 4; what changes is the answer, which is now reduced and written as a mixed number rather than left as it was worked.

Why are these answers simplified when the Year 4 ones are not?

Because that is the point of Year 5. In Year 3 and Year 4 a child writes the answer with the denominator they worked in, and marking it any other way would be wrong. In Year 5 they start using factors to simplify where it helps, so 8/12 is marked as 2/3. If your child has not met simplifying yet, the Year 4 sheet is the one you want.

What is a mixed number?

A whole number with a fraction beside it, like 1 1/3. When a total goes past one whole, Year 5 is the year children learn to write 12/9 as 1 1/3 instead of leaving it top-heavy. Both are the same amount; the mixed number is the form Year 5 is asked for.
